Battery Safety Guide: How to Care for Your Device

Battery safety is the most critical aspect of owning a vape. Whether you use a starter kit with a built-in battery or an advanced mod with removable cells, treating your power source with care is essential.

Proper maintenance prevents issues like overheating, performance drops, and rare venting incidents. Lithium-ion batteries (similar to those in smartphones) are generally safe, provided they are handled correctly. As a trusted New Zealand retailer, we are committed to providing you with the authentic gear and knowledge you need to vape safely.

Internal & Built-In Batteries
Applies to: Pod Vapes, Starter Kits, and Prefilled Vapes.

Devices with non-removable batteries are convenient, but they still require care to maintain their lifespan and safety.

  • Storage: Store your device in a cool, dry place. Never leave your vape in direct sunlight or in a hot car, as extreme heat can degrade the battery chemistry and lead to overheating.
  • Handling: Protect your device from drops and impact. Internal damage can cause a battery to short-circuit. We recommend using a silicone sleeve or protective case to minimize shock damage.

Charging Best Practices:
Refer to your user manual for specific amperage requirements.

Avoid Overcharging: disconnect the device as soon as it reaches 100%. Leaving any electronic device charging overnight or for extended periods degrades battery health.

Authenticity Matters: Counterfeit or "clone" devices often bypass critical safety testing to cut costs. Authentic products sold by authorized retailers (like Hawke's Bay Vapour) contain regulated chips with safety features designed to prevent accidents.

External Batteries (18650, 21700, etc.)
Applies to: Advanced Kits, Box Mods, and High-Wattage Devices.

Handling loose lithium-ion batteries requires strict adherence to safety protocols. Misuse can lead to serious personal injury or property damage.

The Golden Rules of External Battery Safety

ALWAYS use a battery case: Never carry loose batteries in your pocket or bag. If the metal terminals touch keys, coins, or other metal objects, the battery will hard-short and potentially vent (explode).

Inspect your wraps: The plastic casing (wrap) on your battery prevents short circuits. If the wrap has a nick, scratch, or tear, do not use it. Replace the wrap immediately or dispose of the battery.

Keep the Isolator Ring: Ensure the small black or white O-ring on the positive end remains intact.

Temperature Control: Do not store batteries below 0°C or above 50°C.

Proper Charging & Pairing

Use an External Charger: While many mods have USB ports, these are often designed for firmware updates rather than daily charging. A dedicated external charger is safer, cooler, and balances your batteries accurately, extending the life of both your batteries and your mod.

Marry Your Batteries: If your device requires two or more batteries, buy them new together and strictly use them as a pair. Do not mix old and new batteries or different brands, as uneven discharge rates can stress the cells.

3. When to Replace Your Vape Battery

Lithium-ion batteries are consumables; they do not last forever. Replace your battery immediately if you notice:

  • Physical damage (dents, rust spots, or swelling).
  • Torn or peeling battery wraps.
  • Leaking fluid or odd smells.
  • The battery gets unusually hot during use or charging.
  • A significant drop in performance or battery life.
  • The voltage drops below 2.0V or fails to reach a full 4.2V charge.

Eco-Friendly Disposal

Never throw lithium batteries in the general rubbish. Batteries in landfills can leak toxic chemicals or start fires. Please recycle your old batteries responsibly at a hazardous waste disposal site, or drop them off at designated battery recycling bins found at many hardware stores and electronics retailers.

Purchasing Authentic Batteries

Not all batteries are created equal. High-wattage vaping requires batteries that can safely handle high amperage.

Trusted Brands:
Look for reputable manufacturers like Golisi and Molicel.

Avoid Re-wraps:
Be cautious of brands that overstate capacity (mAh) or Amps. If a battery claims specifications that seem too good to be true, it is likely a lower-quality cell with a new label.

Our Recommendation:
We stock Golisi batteries because they are rigorously tested and safe for the devices we sell.
